Accepting the Microsoft Invite for Proxy Access to MySlice
Updated Oct 03

Accepting the Microsoft Invite for Proxy Access to MySlice

    • 1 Verify Your Account and Accept Permissions
    • 2 Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication
      • 2.1 Setting Up Microsoft Authenticator
      • 2.2 Setting Up Texts To Your Phone

After the student has added the email address of the proxy to MySlice, the email address will get an invitation email from Microsoft. To redeem this invitation and finalize the setup of the proxy account, do the following:

Verify Your Account and Accept Permissions

    1. Select the “Accept Invitation” link in the email.

Send a code to the user's email
    1. An email will be sent from Microsoft with an “account verification code.” Enter the code into the next screen. This email can take several minutes to arrive.

Enter the code received from Microsoft

    1. The next screen will prompt you to accept permissions.

    Permissions Requested by Syracuse University

    1. If you were already signed in with a Microsoft account, you may need to switch to the account that will be used for proxy access. Double-check the email address on the “Keep Your Account Secure” page, and change to the account to be used for proxy access if necessary.

Keep Account Secure. Can switch to a different account if needed using the provided link

    Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication

    1. On the next screen, you’ll be prompted to set up Microsoft Authenticator on a mobile device. This authenticator application can be used to help secure access to your account by requiring that you enter a code from your mobile device to complete a login to the account. Microsoft Authenticator can be installed from the Apple App Store or Google Play. A link to download the application is provided on the page. If you are prompted to allow notifications for the authenticator application, allow them. Using authenticator notifications makes the login process easier.

Microsoft Authenticator is the preferred method to use, but you do have the option to have a code sent to your mobile device via text instead. If you prefer to use text messages, select the “I want to set up a different method” link on this page.

Although Microsoft Authenticator is the preferred type of authentication application, you also have the option to use a different authenticator app. If you already have a preferred authenticator app, you can set it up by using the “I want to use a different authenticator app” link on the screen. Note that if you have trouble logging into MySlice with that authenticator application, you may need to switch to Microsoft Authenticator, which has been tested and verified to work with MySlice.

    Setting Up Microsoft Authenticator

This section is to set up Microsoft Authenticator. If you selected “I want to set up a different method” to set up text messages to your phone, skip to the “Setting Up Texts to a Phone” section.

    1. If you elected to set up Microsoft Authenticator, a screen appears that says “Set Up Your Account.”

    image-20250818-182954.png

While the page says to select “Work or school”, you need to select “Other” when you add your account to Authenticator if it is a non-Microsoft account (ex: gmail, yahoo, verizon). If it is a personal Microsoft account (ex: live, outlook, msn), select “Personal Account”. If you have any issues setting up Authenticator, an alternative is to set up text messages instead (see “Setting up Texts to Your Phone”) below.

While on this page, launch the Microsoft Authenticator application you installed on your mobile device. It should have an icon like

Microsoft Authenticator Icon with blue lock

Click the + sign in the upper-right hand corner of the authenticator application

Authenticator has plus sign in upper-right hand corner

The authenticator application will display a screen with three options for adding an account. If you have a personal account with Microsoft (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com, @live.com), use the “personal account” option. If you are using a Microsoft account through your company, non-SU university, or other Microsoft organization, use the “work or school” option. If you are using a non-Microsoft account (@gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @verizon.com, etc.), select the “Other” option.

Add account using personal, work or school, or other option

The authenticator application will now bring up a screen to scan a QR code.

    Box to scan QR code
    1. Go back to the “Setup Your Account” page and select Next.

    2. A page with a QR code will now appear. Hold your mobile device camera to enclose the QR code in the provided box. If you are unable to scan the image, use the “can’t scan image” to get a “secret key” that you can enter in manually in the Authenticator application using the “enter manually” link on the QR scanning page in the application. When done, select “Next”

Scan the QR code provided on the page using your mobile device and select Next

    1. You are now going to verify that Microsoft Authenticator is working for your account . A screen appears that includes a code (the xxxx in the screen shot below is obscuring the actual code) that will be sent to the Microsoft Authenticator application.

You should get a pop-up on your mobile device alerting you that a Microsoft Authenticator request has been received. Open the notification and enter the code into the Microsoft Authenticator app.

    1. You should automatically get a screen that the notification was approved. Select “Next”

    1. You may now see a screen asking you whether you trust syr.edu. This is to verify you want to log into a Syracuse University (syr.edu) website. Select “Accept”

    Do you trust syr.edu

You should now be able to log into MySlice (myslice.syr.edu). You don’t need to complete the “Setting up Texts” section below since you’ve successfully configured Microsoft Authenticator.

If you are using an SU-managed machine, you’ll need to use an “incognito” window in Chrome or “inPrivate” window in Edge to log into MySlice using your proxy account.

Setting Up Texts To Your Phone

If you set up Microsoft Authenticator, you don’t need to complete the steps in this section. If you selected “I want to set up a different method”, then you will see the following screens:

    1. You are directed to a page that has the option to setup “Microsoft Authenticator,” “Hardware Token,” or “Phone.” Select “Phone”

    7. On the “Phone” page, select the country code for your phone and then enter the phone number. You then choose whether to receive text messages (“receive a code” option) or a phone call to verify the access requests. Note that message and data rates may apply.

    1. If you selected “receive a code”, enter the code that is texted to your phone on the next screen

Enter code received in the text message

    9. If the code is accepted, you’ll see a screen that phone verification is complete.
