Embedding Kaltura Videos in Blackboard
Kaltura in Blackboard
Kaltura is the supported video streaming platform for Syracuse University faculty, staff, and students. Kaltura videos can be embedded into Blackboard courses in the content area by instructors and in any location where a user, including students, can access a text editor.
Access Kaltura Media in a Text Editor
To add a Kaltura video in a text area, click on the plus sign icon in the text editor and select Content Market from the dropdown list.
Select the Kaltura Media tile from the alphabetical content market list.
Access Kaltura Video in the Content Area
Kaltura videos can be embedded directly inside of the content area on your Blackboard course. In the Course Content area, select the plus sign wherever you want to the Kaltura video. Select Content Market from the dropdown menu.
Select the Kaltura Media tile from the alphabetical content market list.
Selecting a Video from Your Library to Embed
For media that you’ve already ingested, click Add from Library. This location also allows you to Upload Media, record from Webcam with Kaltura Express, and Add from YouTube. With each of those options you can also select Embed to add the entry to your Blackboard course.
Clicking Add from Library opens My Media to display entries that you have in your Kaltura Library. You can search or sort by clicking on the column headers. You can preview items by click the eye icon in that row.
Once you’ve located the video in your library, clicking Embed for it will place it in your selected location with the largest non-transcript player.
Embed Settings
You can select a smaller player or a transcript player by clicking the slider button to the left of the Embed button. The settings you can choose are:
Select a Player that does or does not include a transcript.
Transcripts that are included are available for download
Choose a video display size
Toggle on/off: Thumbnail Embed
With this off, Blackboard will automatically load a player for each Kaltura video on the page. This makes playback begin more quickly.
With this on, Blackboard only loads a player for the video once the thumbnail is clicked. This is useful if you have a large number of videos in a single page. The page load will be faster but the playback will be slightly slower to begin once the video is clicked.
Start video at: You can set the video to start playback at a point beyond the beginning of the video but it does not prevent the viewer from being able to rewind and watch before that point.
If you check the box to Save these settings as defaults, the system will use these settings the next time you click Embed on the library page.
