Adding Media to Your Kaltura Library

There are a number of ways to add media to your video library and make it available for embedding in Blackboard.

In some cases you can add the media directly in Blackboard from the location where you are embedding the video. From a Blackboard course you can Upload, use Express Capture/Record from Webcam, and add a video from YouTube. Other methods require you to add the media from your My Media page to access them for embedding.

Finding your Media Library

Access My Media from the top-level Blackboard page, click Tools in the main menu, and click the Kaltura My Media tile.

On the My Media page, click Create to access a variety options for adding media.

The Kaltura platform is designed for hosting active-use video content and not as long-term storage. Video uploaded into Kaltura will remain on the system for 24 months from the upload date or 24 months from the last time the entry was played for at least 30 seconds. For any videos you wish to keep long-term, please be sure to maintain a copy in your own storage outside of Kaltura.

Kaltura Capture

Kaltura Capture is an application that can be downloaded to your computer that can be used to record audio, video, and screen record. Users use Kaltura Capture to record their video and upload it directly into your library.

YouTube

Videos from YouTube can be linked to your Kaltura Library. The advantage of adding YouTube videos to you Kaltura is that they appear with the same look and feel as other videos in your course and you can track the viewership with Kaltura analytics.

To add a YouTube video, paste its URL or content ID into the box and to link the video to your Kaltura Library.

YouTube videos remain in the YouTube system under the control of the owner there and are not transferred into Kaltura. If the video owner removes it or unpublishes it in YouTube, it will no longer play in Kaltura

Zoom Recordings

Zoom cloud recordings remain there streaming and sharing from Zoom for 120 days. All Zoom cloud recordings are automatically transferred to Kaltura for longer-term streaming after they are ready in Zoom. The delay for the recording to appear in your Kaltura library is commonly two to four times the total length of your recording. An hour-long class recording would commonly appear for processing in Kaltura two to four hours after you finish recording.

Kaltura Mobile App

Kaltura has a mobile app called KMS Go for uploading media. It is support on IOS and Android.

To access your Syracuse University account in the app, enter http://video.syr.edu when prompted for the site address.

Recording Processing Time

It takes the Kaltura some time to optimize your recordings for streaming. The process can take one to three times as long as the length of your media. Hour-long recordings may take one to three hours to be available to viewers.

Once the media is in the library, users can embed it, even if the transcoding process is incomplete. They video will temporarily display a notice that it is being processed and will automatically become visible once it is ready.
