    2013: Undergraduates Recognized

    On May 1, 2013 the Maxwell School celebrated the achievements of undergraduate scholarship in the Social Sciences in the first annual Maxwell Celebration of Undergraduate Scholarship. Our celebration consisted of individual events hosted by each department as well as a multi-disciplinary poster session featuring research undertaken by undergraduate students during the current academic year.

    The following awards were presented during the celebration.

    MAX 123/132 Exemplary Student Award, selected by MAX course faculty

    • MAX 123 – Fall 2012 semester, the winner of this award is Alex C. Sternisha, who wrote a deliberative essay for Kellen Backer’s course in response to a final exam prompt focusing on ideas self-interest and democratic citizenship.

    • MAX 123 – Spring 2013 semester, the winner is Benjamin Choe for his paper titled Reducing Health Care Costs for the U.S. for Professor Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn.

    • MAX 132 – Fall 2012 semester, the winner is Devon Beebe whose essay for Professor John Western’s class was titled Global Environment and Global Action.

    • MAX 132 – Spring 2013 semester, the winner is Magenta Silberman for her essay Globalization’s Impact on Conflict and Identity, for Professor Miriam Elman.

    Outstanding Student Research Paper, selected by a Maxwell faculty committee

    • Awarded to Brittany Legasey for her work in Professor Jonathan Hanson’s class entitled Congressional Media Strategy: House Members, Rhetorical Strategies and Press Releases.

    • Awarded to Brendan Kotowski for his work in Professor Osamah Khalil’s class entitled Kissinger, Congress, and the Green Line: The U.S. and the 1974 Cyprus Crisis.

    Best Poster Award, selected by viewer voting during the poster session

    • Awarded to Jonathan Polo for his work in Professor Mary Lovely’s class entitled Rentier States and the Arab Spring: Implications of Oil Economies on Revolutionary Movements in the MENA Region.

    Congratulations to all the students who participated and thank you to all the faculty and staff who supported the students in this foundational endeavor.
