Smart Connect for Jira

Smart Connect for Jira

This is required for integrating Orange Tracker and MS Teams. This is called Smart Connect for Jira. This is installed per a User and/or Team (all channels), on a single channel which then enables it for all channels in that Team.

A setup and initialization process is required and documented below.

User Install

The user install provides the ability for users to:

  • Create Orange Tracker work items directly from an MS Teams message

  • Create comments on a specific Orange Tracker work item from an MS Teams messag

  • Link existing MS Teams chats to an existing Orange Tracker work item.

Follow the steps below to install at the user-level:

  1. In MS Teams navigate to Apps

  2. Search for and select Smart Connect for Jira

  3. Where it defaults to Add to a team, select the dropdown arrow and select Add for me

  4. Screen will transition to the Smart Connect for Jira app, noting it has been installed

  5. Proceed with the Smart Connect for Jira | Setup & Initialization below.

Team (Channel) Install

Must be the Owner of an MS Team to install.

The following outlines installing the Smart Connect for Jira for a single Microsoft Team.

  1. Navigate to the Team in MS Teams desired to integrate with Orange Tracker

  2. Select Manage Team (three dots; top-level of the Team)

  3. Select Apps

  4. Select Get more apps

  5. Search for “Smart Connect for Jira”

  6. Select Open on the Smart Connect for Jira option

  7. Under Select a channel, select View more

  8. Search for and select any channel in the desired MS Team (selecting the General channel in the desired Team is best practice; this will enable for ALL channels in the Team)

  9. Select Go

Setup & Initialization

Setup and initialization is required to create the connection to our Atlassian JSM instance. This involves using an “initialization” Teams message. To setup & initialize:

  1. Navigate to a chat containing a message to start the config

  2. Right-click on the message, then select Smart Connect for Jira. This should present a dialogue prompting sign-in.

  3. Select Sign In

  4. Select the Jira Cloud option

  5. Select Login

  6. On the site selection (Use app on:) dropdown, select: ot.atlassian.syr.edu

  7. Select Accept

  8. On the Choose Jira Instance, if displaying more than one option, select: su-jsm.atlassian.net

  9. The Smart Connect for Jira for creating Orange Tracker work items from an MS Teams message is now configured.

Troubleshooting

Unauthenticated/Unable to authenticate

  1. Navigate to a Team channel where the Smart Connect for Jira is installed

  2. Start a new channel post

  3. Select the + icon in the bottom of the text area

  4. Locate Smart Connect for Jira and right-click on it

  5. Select the Settings option in the right-click dropdown

  6. The dialogue that appears will show an indefinitely loading authentication - select Log out

  7. Repeat the login process via any method above
