Three ways to use Claude
Chat, Cowork, and Code are all included in your Syracuse Claude Enterprise account at no additional cost. Most people start with Chat and grow into the other two.
Chat — The everyday assistant: ask questions, draft and revise, summarize long documents, and analyze data. Works in any browser, the desktop app, and on your phone.
Cowork — For work that takes more than one step. Hand Claude a task that spans several files or stages, then review what it brings back. Best in the desktop app.
Code — Claude working directly in a codebase, or handling repetitive computer tasks: reading a project, writing and editing code, and running commands to check its own work. Runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, and in the desktop app.
Recommended setup: Chat works in any browser, but Cowork and Code are designed for the desktop app. On a University-managed computer you can install it yourself — search for Claude in Company Portal (Windows) or Jamf Self Service (macOS); no ticket or admin rights needed. On a personal computer, download it from https://claude.ai/download. Either way, sign in with your Syracuse email address so your work stays under University data protections. On Windows, restart your computer once after installing before you open Claude. Full setup instructions and details are on the Claude at Syracuse page: https://ai.syracuse.edu/claude.html

Example interactions:
"Help me write a professional email declining a meeting invitation"
"Explain quantum computing like I'm a freshman"

"Help me prepare for my presentation on climate change"
"Create a study schedule for my finals week"
Best Practices for New Users
Start Simple: Begin with straightforward questions to get comfortable with how Claude responds.
Be Specific: The more detail you provide, the better Claude can help. Instead of "help with my essay," try "help me create an outline for a 5-page essay about the impact of social media on democracy."
Iterate and Refine: Don't hesitate to ask follow-up questions or request changes. You can say things like:
"Make this more formal"
"Explain that in simpler terms"
"Give me three more examples"
"Make this shorter"
Verify Important Information: While Claude is highly capable, always double-check critical facts, citations, and data for important work.
