Reporting Fire incidents in the lab/classroom

Syracuse University Fire and Life Safety Services suggests the following corrective actions be put in place going forward:

  • Any experiments involving open flame that are conducted in a classroom or other area that are not teaching laboratories, Fire and Life Safety (FLSS) must be notified 24 hours prior to the experiment taking place.

    • The following information shall be provided:

      • Date and time of the experiment

      • Person in charge of the experiment

      • Where the experiment is to be conducted, i.e. Building Name and Room Number

      • Brief description of the experiment

    • Fire and Life Safety staff will conduct a check of the area to ensure all protective measures are in place and will make a determination at that time if we need to assign FLSS personnel to be present for the duration of the experiment.

    • Fire and Life Safety Contact Information

      • John Rossiter, Fire and Life Safety Manager

      • Brian O’Hara, Health and Safety Specialist/Assistant Manager

      • Matt Speach, Fire and Life Safety Inspector Supervisor

      • Brian Tarolli, Safety Compliance Administrator

  • All incidents, no matter the severity, especially those involving fire, must be immediately reported to the Department of Public Safety by calling 315-443-2224, 911, 711 from any Campus landline or via the Orange Safe app.

  • Should an experiment get out of control, evacuate the area immediately and activate the fire alarm system via an emergency pull station upon exiting the building.
