Marking Withdrawn Students in the Gradebook

Marking Withdrawn Students in the Gradebook

Blackboard enrollments are drawn from enrollments in MySlice. Students that leave a course after the academic drop deadline are not removed from the MySlice roster; they receive a grade status of WD, which is recorded on their transcript. Because the student remains on the MySlice roster, they also remain on the roster in Blackboard. Instructors cannot hide withdrawn students in Blackboard courses, but they can add an indicator of the status in the Gradebook by adding an Overall Grade Notation.

Enter the course in Blackboard. Select Gradebook from the menu at the top of the course and then open the Gradebook Settings.

In the settings panel, locate the Overall Grade Notations area, which is the final element on the page and click Add Overall Grade Notation.

Enter a Notation and Description for the new notation. For a withdrawn student, you might choose “W” for the notation and “Withdrawn” for the description. Once you have created the notation, close the Gradebook Settings area. Move to the Grades view of the Gradebook, the view that displays the grade items as columns and the students as rows.

Locate the withdrawn student and select the grade bubble for their overall grade. Either type the notation you created in the overall grade pill or select it from the dropdown menu.

Once applied, the grade notation will now display as the student’s overall grade on the Grades view.

Elsewhere, the overall grade will appear as greyed out for that student.
