Students

Syracuse University College of Engineering and Computer Science (E&CS) recommends a laptop or desktop computer configured with:

  • At least an Intel® Core™ i5 processor.
  • At least 8GB of RAM. Students who will be using virtualization tools such as VMware, VirtualBox or Parallels may want 16 GB for better performance.
  • Windows® 7 Pro 64-bit or newer.
  • Engineering students installing CAD or FEA software should consider an i7 processor, at least 8-16 GB RAM and a graphics card with at least 1 GB RAM.  Disk speed should be at least 7200 rpm.  Solid-state drives will add substantially to the price, but give the best performance and durability for laptops.

We recommend the maximum warranty coverage including accidental damage protection for the computer.

Those that prefer to use a Mac should be aware that a majority of applications in the Syracuse University College of Engineering and Computer Science are Microsoft Windows specific. However, you can run Windows based applications in a virtualization environment such as VMWare Fusion or Parallels and would need to purchase a copy of Windows 7 64-bit or newer for a virtualized configuration.  Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department majors can get Windows operating systems and development tools for free through the department’s Microsoft DreamSpark/Academic Alliance subscription.

Some of the Dell and Apple computers available for purchase through the SU Bookstore meet the minimum requirements (http://bookstore.syr.edu).

In terms of software, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader and antivirus software such as Microsoft Security Essentials are recommended.  Microsoft Office 365 and other software is available to Syracuse University students from the SU Bookstore (http://bookstore.syr.edu).  Though most applications used in the College of Engineering and Computer Science are licensed only for the E&CS computer labs, some are available for students to install on their personal computers. Specifics about such software are usually provided by the class instructor in the first weeks of class.

As a current student at Syracuse University, you can use your SUmail student email account to download and install Office 365 ProPlus applications (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) on up to five computers (PC and Mac) and five mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android smartphone, Windows Phone) for free. Visit http://Answers.syr.edu/Office365 for complete details and instructions.
