This page outlines the steps to connect to RDS using an RDP client the Windows app on supported laptop and desktop operating systems. At present, both Windows and macOS are supported.

Connect to RDS via Remote Desktop

Instructions

Installation

  • Windows

  • macOS

    Download and install the Microsoft Remote Desktop Mac App
    Accessing the RDS Collection
    Launch the Remote Desktop app on your OS and click on the + Add button > Workspaces

    You can access RDS by entering your email <NetID>@syr.edu

  • Click on Subscribe to add the collection(s) to your Workspace

  • You will now be able to access your collection directly

  • When prompted for login to the collection resource

    • Username: Enter your email in the format <Your NetID>@syr.edu.

    • Password: Enter your NetID password.

  • Troubleshooting

    Problem:   

    RDP Error -   "There was a problem connecting to the remote resource. Ask your network administrator for help"

    Solution: 

    Download the RDP file again following the instruction above. The old file may no longer hold correct connection information.

    Install the Windows App

    Before using the Windows App to connect to RDS, you must first install the software onto your device. Use the links below to download and install the Windows App for either WindowsOS or MacOS:

    Connect to RDS via Remote Desktop

    1. Launch the Windows App and click “Sign In”. Use your Syracuse credentials (SUMail address & NetID password) to login.

    1. You may be presented with information about the Windows App. You can read each page and click Done afterwards, or press Skip to proceed to the next step.

    1. From the Devices page, choose the remote environment you wish to access and select “Connect”.

    1. If you receive a popup asking “Allow remote desktop connection”, select Yes to continue.

    Retrieving an RDP File for RDS

    To connect through the RDP client, you first need to obtain the RDP file from the web client.

    Accessing RDS

    Open a web browser and go to rds.syr.edu.

    Settings Access

    In the top right corner, you'll see a sprocket icon ⚙️. Click on it.

    Download Setting

    In the Settings Pane, select the radio button labeled "Download the rdp file."

    If you are not logged in already, you might be prompted to do so using your email address (NetID@syr.edu) and NetID password

    Resource Selection 

    Return to the main screen of the web page and choose a resource icon. Clicking on a collection icon will trigger the download of an RDP file, which can then be used to connect.
