Recommended Account Settings

Since there has been a large increase in those hosting Zoom Meetings, internet trolls have been "Zoombombingzoombombing" public meetings by sharing their screen and playing disturbing, pornographic, or violent content. The following simple settings changes will prevent this from being able to happen. While . On March 26th, 2020 Zoom updated what features are turned on/off by default to help combat 'zoombombing." and while some of these settings are enabled/dsabled by default, we strongly suggest reviewing your settings in detail before launching your first Zoom meeting.

The accounts settings below are required if you are someone handling health information as it is critical in ensuring the privacy and security of patient/client health information. If you will be interacting with health data, please review our Zoom Settings for Health Data page prior to using of Zoom.


In your Zoom settings:

  • Change screen sharing to “Host Only.”
  • Enabling “Co-Host” so you can assign your TA or other another trusted person to help moderate larger groups.
  • Disable “File Transfer” so there’s no digital virus sharing.
  • Disable “Join Before Host” so people can’t cause trouble before you arrive. (Default Setting
  • Change screen sharing to “Host Only.” (Default Setting)
  • Disable “Allow Removed Participants to Rejoin” so booted attendees can’t slip back in. (Default Setting)

Joining a Meeting (Web Browser)

  1. Open any browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox). 
  2. Go to https://syracuseuniversity.zoom.us/ and select "Join".
  3. Enter your meeting ID provided by the host/organizer.

4.  Click Join. You will be asked to open the Zoom client to join the meeting.

Joining a Meeting (Desktop App)

Open Zoom desktop ClientJoin a meeting using one of these methods:

  1. Click Join a Meeting if you want to join without signing in.

  2. Sign in to Zoom then click Join

Enter the meeting ID number and your display name.
 

  1. If you're signed in, change your name if you don't want your default name to appear.

  2. If you're not signed in, enter a display name.
