Clear QAM Digital Service
All televisions on campus Televisions intended to be used in campus residence halls must contain a QAM digital tuner in order to receive the available digital channels. Older analog televisions are no longer compatible with the University’s cable TV service. Most televisions today are digital/QAM compliant, however, less expensive or budget televisions may not be. To find out if your television has a QAM tuner, check the specifications in your owner's manual, or visit the manufacturer's website.

A QAM tuner allows your TV to tune to digital or HD channels. Most, but not all, TV’s that were made after 2006 have a QAM tuner built in. You can search online by make/model of your TV or reference your TV’s owner’s manual for specific model information related to what type of tuner is present in your TV has.
An example of what the manual may say if the TV has a QAM tuner: “Built-in digital tuner (ATSC/Clear QAM)”, or “NTSC/QAM“ Additionally, if your TV remote has the (.) or (-) symbol button for easy tuning or is able to display channels such as 5.2 or 5-2, your TV likely has a QAM tuner.

ITS will supply a student with a QAM tuner in the event that they have a television that does not have one. If a student is in need of a QAM tuner, please visit our walk in center located at 1-227 CST contact the ITS Service Center (Hours of Operation). Before the service center will supply you with a converter, you we must identify your TV as not having a Clear QAM tuner. If you have not done so, or have difficultiesdifficulties identifying your TV's tuner, please call us at 315-443-2677 Mon-Fri 8a-5p est EDT and a consultant will assist you. Please have your TV's make and model available when you call. This is usually located on the back of the television. |

- Ensure that the power cord is securely fastened to the TV and to the wall outlet. A surge protector is preferred.
- If you have a cable box, verify the cable is connected to the "IN" jack on the cable box. Connect the outgoing video quality desired to the corresponding input of the television.
- If you don't have a cable box, verify the cable coming from the wall Ensure the coaxial cable you plug into the wall outlet is plugged into the "IN" jack on the TV (or VCR, DVD).

Be sure to inspect both the power cord and signal cables (coaxial, HDMI when applicable). These cables should never be placed in high traffic areas and all excess length should be managed as neatly as possible. |
If you are plugging in your TV for the first time and you are using the TV's tuner, run the "Auto Program":
- go to the Open the menu. This is often selectable via a Menu, Programming or Action Button on your remote (some TVs also have a menu button on the TV).
- go Navigate to the Setup/Channel area of the menu.
- If you are prompted to choose between Off-Air and Cable, Select Cable or CATV.
- Go to Auto Program and select it. This can also be called "Channel Scan" or "Initial Setup".
- Your TV should now automatically scroll through the channels.
- Save the changes and Exit.
