Purchase Claude Code and Claude API Access
Overview
Claude Code and Claude API are advanced features offered by Anthropic. Members of the Syracuse University community are provided standard seats/licenses for Claude Enterprise. These advanced features will incur a cost on the department and/or student if they wish to use them.
Claude Code and Claude API are packaged together, so getting access to Claude Code will also provide access to Claude API.
Faculty and Staff Information
Faculty and Staff that wish to have access to Claude Code and/or Claude API will need to get approval from their department to purchase a premium seat license or use a university business credit card to purchase credits.
Paying for Claude Code usage
Claude Code can be purchased using Departmental Funds and is charged based on monthly usage to a university chart string. Fill out the request form at the link below to get setup with access. Claude Code API Interest and Access Request Form
You will be asked to provide the following information:

Monthly Spending Cap (USD) | The maximum amount your department has approved for monthly API credit charges, up to a maximum of $200 per month. If more than $200 is needed, please consider a premium seat license instead. |
Chart-string | The Fund 11 chart-string approved for monthly API credit charges. |
Financial Approver | Email address of the department financial approver. |
IT Lead | Email address of the department IT lead. |
Once the request has been processed you will receive an email with an invitation to the Syracuse University Claude Code platform instance. Open the invitation email from Anthropic and click the acceptance link. Sign in with your Syracuse University credentials (netid@syr.edu).
Purchasing Credits
If you instead wish to use a university business credit card to just buy credits, please follow the process below and use the card to purchase the credits.
Upon separation with the university, your Syracuse University Claude Enterprise access will be removed and with it, you will lose any unused credits. Be cognizant of your usage as to not over purchase credits.
Navigate to https://console.anthropic.com/
Choose “Individual” option on the create screen (when logged in with your SU account, you are still being protected by SU’s contract even though you are purchasing the credits)
Click on the “Buy Credits” button and complete the purchase of some amount of credits

Premium Seat
If you wish to have a Claude Premium seat and have approval from your department to fund it, navigate to the Access Package to request the premium seat. Following approval, the cost is pro-rated and billed to the department based on our contract with Anthropic.
If you are encountering problems with rate limits, you may wish to have a premium seat purchased instead of buying credits, as it will increase those limits.
Student Information
Students
Students will need to purchase Claude Code access by signing up for an “Individual” Claude Console Workspace and buying credits with their own funds, i.e. on a credit card. When purchasing access through your Syracuse University Claude Enterprise account, as opposed to your own account, you will have the benefits of being protected by Syracuse University’s enterprise agreement with Anthropic. This agreement will help protect your data and not have it used for training, in addition to allowing you to upload university data into your Claude instance while following the Syracuse University guidelines.
Upon graduating or leaving the university, your Syracuse University Claude Enterprise access will be removed and with it, you will lose any unused credits. Be cognizant of your usage as to not over purchase credits.
Student Workers/Graduate Assistants
If you are a student worker or graduate assistant who feels they need Claude Code for their work, speak with your department about the option to have them purchase a premium seat or get you credits. The department can then reach out to ITS for assistance in this process.
