Face-to-face sessions: Appointments are available for students to work with any available consultants face-to-face. We also take walk-ins!
Synchronous Online Sessions : Students chat one-to-one online with a writing consultant using our scheduling software, WCOnline. Appointments can be made by choosing the appropriate schedule from the available schedules. A synchronous online appointment can be booked no less than 30 minutes prior to the time that it is scheduled to start.
Asynchronous Online Sessions : Students submit a draft via their appointment, and a consultant responds before the conclusion of a given appointment. Asynchronous appointments can be made up to four hours before an appointment is scheduled to begin and are limited to 30 minutes each. Expectations:
Maximum appointment length is 30 minutes rather than an hour
Appointments must be made at least 4 hours in advance
Students must attach a document when booking an async appointment
Consultants should return the document with in-text comments (if any) in the same format in which it came (if it is a pdf, send the student a pdf; if it is a Word doc, send the student a Word doc)
Students can book up to two async appointments each week
Consultant Policies
Timeliness: If you’re on the face-to-face schedule, you’re expected to be in the Writing Center before your shift begins. If you’re on the synchronous schedule, you should be logged in and at your computer during your shifts. Be sure to log into the schedule a few minutes before your shift begins.
The Schedule and Modifying Hours. The schedule will be live prior to the second week of classes. If you need to change hours for a single shift, please contact Rae Ann. If you need a more permanent, long-term change to your schedule, please contact Collie. Also, please keep the following in mind:
try to notify Rae Ann at least 7 days in advance (this ensures changes are made before students make appointments with you.
Reporting Hours. Please report and check your hours via the google timesheet every week or every other week. Remember that you need to report at least 140 hours by the end of the semester (and watch out for holidays) if you’re working a full consulting section.
Sick?
If you call in sick:
Email Rae Ann (rameriwe@syr.edu) or Collie (cjfulfor@syr.edu) and they will re-arrange your schedule and any scheduled appointments.
Missed hours must be made up in the same modality (i.e. if you are sick for a face-to-face shift, you must make up those hours on the face-to-face schedule).
Student Policies
WCOnline prevents students from reserving more than 2 hours of synchronous appointments and 2 asynchronous appointments per week.
Report any missed appointments on the schedule by marking them as “no-show.” This is important for our record-keeping.
Two-hour appointments are not allowed via WCOnline.
Although WCOnline appointments start on the hour and half-hour, appointments are 25 or 50 minutes. You’re welcome to work with students longer, but this policy is given to students via email when they make an appointment.
We are not an editing service, but it’s important to remember that we do teach grammatical concepts and proofreading strategies. Never send students away.
