Preliminary steps

Adding a Printer

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the left corner of your menu bar and select System Settings
  2. Select Printers & Scanners from the left-hand menu

  3. If you have the previous Law Library printers installed, open each, then select the Remove Printer... button and follow the prompts to delete them
  4. Select the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... button to open the Add Printer dialog
  5. Click the Advanced Options gear icon:
     
    1. Note that this button does not appear by default, and must be added if not yet present
    2. To add, control+click or two-finger click the open space in the toolbar, choose Customize Toolbar..., then drag the Advanced Options gear icon into the toolbar
  6. Select Type: Windows printer via spoolss
  7. Select Device: Another Device


  8. In the URL field enter the following exactly as written:
    smb://law-print.ad.syr.edu/Law-Library1stFloor

  9. Change Name field to Law-Library1stFloor
  10. The Location field is optional, but can be used if desired
  11. Click Choose a Driver... then choose Select Software...


  12. Click Add.

  13. The printer should now be added.

  14. Repeat steps 3 - 12 to add the other  printer (you do not need to repeat steps 4 & 5), ensuring that you select the correct driver.

  15. THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT! PRINTING WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT THIS STEP!

    Try to print a test page or any document and enter your SU NetID credentials when prompted.

    The first time you try to print, you should be prompted to enter your credentials. Delete whatever is listed in the name box and then enter your SU NetID and password. You should save the credentials to your Keychain and you can do so by checking the Remember this password box in the authentication window.

  16. If you are NOT PROMPTED to enter your credentials, and when you try to print, your print job pauses with the message On Hold (Authentication Required),  follow the instructions at this link to fix this issue..

Releasing Your Print Job

Note that items sent to the Law Library's printers are queued on the server and, as a final step, must be manually released to the printer.  Click here for additional details.

Student Organization Printing

Use the same instructions as above.

Issue:

How to Fix:

  1. Open your Mac's Keychain Access application. There are two ways to do this:

    1. Go to your Launchpad, open the Other folder, then click on the Keychain Access icon.
      OR
    2. Click on the magnifying glass icon at the top right corner of your screen,

      In the Spotlight Search window, type Keychain
      Click on the icon for Keychain Access in the results window

  2. In the search box at the top right of the Keychain Access window, type law.
  3. You should see an entry similar to the one below with the same name that you have the printer saved as.

  4. Highlight the entry in the list and then hit the delete key on your keyboard.

  5. Select Delete when prompted.

  6. Now try to print your print job again.

  7. You will be prompted to enter your credentials. Make sure that both the option for Registered User and Remember this password in my keychain are selected.

  8. Enter your NetID and your new password.

    The name field is usually filled in with your Mac username. Please make sure to delete whatever is already in the box and retype your SU NetID username.

  9. Click OK.
  10. You should now be able to print successfully.
