Foreign Language Placement Instructions

Note:  The following procedure uses the French Placement Exam as an example, but the steps in the procedure are the same for all language exams.  Find out which Placement Exams are available online? 

After logging in to MySlice make sure you are in the Student Home section, then select the advising tile, and then select Placement Exams from the sidebar.

The "Take Placement Exams" link will direct you to Blackboard.  Click "OK" if prompted to accept cookies then use the "SU NetID Login" button to sign in.

Under Courses, click Placement Exams (note, your screen may look slightly different than the screenshot below).

Click on the Language Placements content item.

Select the language you wish to take from the list, in the following examples we will use French, and then click on the Survey to begin your language Survey

NOTE: Each Language has a survey and exam component.  The survey is taken before the exam.  The questions have no point value to them; they are required to identify your language background. Depending on your survey answers the exam portion may not be necessary.

Use the Language Placement Survey link to open the survey in the sidebar. Using the "Start Attempt" button will begin the two-question survey. After answering the survey, be sure to use the "Save and Submit" button.

Answer the two questions in the survey and then hit “Submit”.

Confirm your survey submission, you will get a confirmation message once it has been successfully submitted.

 Return to the languages folder, you will either have a placement or the exam component will now appear.

  • If you have been placed after your survey

  • If the exam is required

If you have been placed after your survey

Return to the language folder again and you will now see your language placement. Remember, if you don’t have prior experience with a language then the exam portion is not necessary.

Taking a Placement Exam

Return to the Language folder and you will now see the placement exam has been added, click on French Placement - Continue

NOTE: Some language exams have an audio component. You must have speakers or headphones available before taking these exams.

Click on the exam and then select “start attempt” in the sidebar that pops up.

Use the "Begin" button to start the exam. After answering ALL questions, click: Save and Submit. A warning message will display if there are any unanswered questions.When ready, confirm the exam submission by using the "Ok" button. 

After submitting you will receive a confirmation message to verify your submission was received. Return to the language folder and view your placement results:

You may now register for the language course at the level indicated.



INSTRUCTIONS: VIEW PLACEMENT EXAM RESULTS IN MYSLICE



ILog in to MySlice, and navigate to the Placement Exams section under Student Home in MySlice. The "Placement Exam Scores" will display your results.
