Office Available to SU Students at No Cost

SU is participating in the Microsoft Student Advantage program. Through the program, current SU students (undergraduate, graduate, and part-time) can download and install Office desktop applications on up to five computers (PC, Mac) and mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android). Project Advance students are not eligible for Office 365 ProPlus.

You can download Office 365 ProPlus using your SUmail student email account. Staff and faculty who are also students don't have SUmail accounts but can download the Office applications using a special portal account (visit Office 365 ProPlus for Staff and Faculty Taking Classes at SU). Office applications installed through the Student Advantage program have up to a four year subscription – as long as a student remains eligible. After four years (for current students), or when you graduate or leave the university, the subscription will expire. Current students can renew the subscription one time. Students must connect any device with Office 365 ProPlus to the Internet at least once every 30 days for an automatic license check.

How do I Download and Install Office 365 ProPlus?

You use your SUmail account to download and install Office 365 ProPlus.

Open a browser window on the device on which you wish to install Office 365 ProPlus (on PCs and Macs you'll need a local administrator account)
Go to http://sumail.syr.edu and select "Log into SUmail"
Login using your SUmail credentials
Go to "settings" in the upper right-hand corner (the gear icon next to your name)
Select "Office 365 settings"
Select Software

How do I Manage my Office 365 ProPlus Licenses?

You can manage the licenses you have installed for Office 365 ProPlus using your SUmail account.

Go to http://sumail.syr.edu and select "Log into SUmail"
Login using your SUmail credentials
Go to "settings" in the upper right-hand corner (the gear icon next to your name)
Select "Office 365 settings"
Select "Software"
Select "Office"

A list of devices where you have installed Office 365 ProPlus will appear. Select "deactivate" next to the device to remove the license from that device and make it available for use on another device.

What if I am No Longer a Current Student?

The Microsoft Student Advantage Program, through which Office 365 ProPlus is being offered, is for current students of participating Universities. If you are no longer eligible for the program (you graduate or leave the university), there are consumer or commercial Office 365 plans available.
