Information Technology Services (ITS) offers an ongoing series of workshops and webinars to build faculty and staff awareness of, sensitivity to, and proficiency in ensuring the accessibility of information communications and technologies. The sessions will help participants understand accessibility, put it into practice on the job, and support the University’s efforts to ensure accessibility of documents, systems, and communications across campus. Importantly, the skills learned in these workshops will help you realize in your work the University’s commitment to creating a more accessible, inclusive campus

Note: All sessions will be conducted online in Microsoft Teams. No registration is required. Attend any or all of these sessions by joining the Group-ITS-Accessibility Workshops and Webinars team.  No webcam or microphone is required, Q&A will be conducted via the chat window in Microsoft Teams. Sessions will begin promptly at 1:30.

Assistive Technologies on CampusLearn how assistive technology is used to access documents and the web, and see how important adherance to accessibility guidelines really is. An overview of the various types of assistive technology software used on campus including screen readers, screen magnification tools, speech recognition software, and study aids such as Read&Write and EquatIO, with special emphasis on the accessibility standards that allow these types of assistive technology to interact with content.

Screen Reader Essential Training for Web Accessibility Testers

The WCAG 2.x A and AA Manual Evaluation form used by Syracuse University staff for testing web sites and web applications includes a number of checkpoints that are best tested using a screen reader. These lessons cover the relevant checkpoints as well as a recommended testing technique with the corresponding JAWS/NVDA/VoiceOver keystrokes.

Note: These lessons are not intended to be a comprehensive introduction to the JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver screen readers.

PDFs: Evaluating and Repairing with Adobe Acrobat DC

This session will cover the basics of PDF remediation in Adobe Acrobat DC including:

  • Fixing missing titles,
  • Creating headings,
  • Adding alternative text to graphics
  • Adding table headers
  • Checking and correcting reading order
  • Strategies for working with scanned PDFs

Word: Creating Accessible Documents in Microsoft Word 2016

This session will cover the process of creating accessible documents in Microsoft Word. Topics include:

  • Use of styles to add structure to your document
  • Adding alternative text to images
  • Using descriptive hyperlinks
  • Creating accessible charts and tables
  • Using the MS Word Accessibility checker
  • Exporting to an accessible PDF

Note: Although MS Word 2016 is used for demonstration in this session, the concepts can be applied to any version of Word.

This workshop is designed for anyone who creates presentation materials using Microsoft PowerPoint. It covers not only making the PowerPoint slide set accessible, but also accessibility considerations when presenting and distributing or posting presentation materials.

Major topics covered include:

  • Using slide layouts
  • Adding meaningful descriptions to images
  • Creating handouts in multiple accessible formats
  • Tips for presenting to inclusive audiences
  • Creating alternate formats of PowerPoint files for posting on the web or distributing via email
