Overview
The IST-S-STUDENTS server is a web and database hosting environment used by technology classes in the iSchool. If you're taking or teaching a web design, web programming, or database class such as: IST263, IST553, IST479, IST679, IST359, or IST659 then this server will probably suit your needs. All iSchool courses are eligible to use this service to supplement teaching or project work within their class.
**NEW FOR FALL 2016**
The IST-S-STUDENTS system is now configured to utilize the university's Microsoft Active Directory service, which means that it is now like most other services on campus, and you can sign-in using your SU NetID and password. This is a significant change from the previous version, but we think it's for the best. Check out the tutorials section to get started.
The "good":
- Student and instructor accounts are automatically generated based on course enrollment – instructors no longer need to manually create accounts
- Authentication now uses your NetID and password rather than a custom account
- Each student and instructor is now provisioned a web home directory on the G-drive – no more FTP
The (not so) "bad":
- Off-domain (personal computers or "unmanaged" staff/faculty computers) will require a little bit of finagling to connect SQL Management Studio to your databases, since you need to run the program with your SU domain account. However, this is fairly straightforward and is explained in a tutorial below.
- MySQL support has ended – for the past several semesters there has been little to no utilization of MySQL so we've decided to retire it
What Technologies Are Supported?
As of Fall 2016:
- Web Page Design (HTML / CSS / Javascript)
- Database design using Microsoft SQL Server 2014
- PHP 7.0 Scripting Language
If something's missing that you need... please ask via helpdesk ticket via https://my.ischool.syr.edu
What if my student is in another class also using this service?
No problem. Every iSchool student is provided with a database account for each IST course for which they are registered.
As the class instructor, do I get an account?
Yes, you get an account for each class that you're teaching in the current semester. Your account works just like a student account EXCEPT in addition to your own databases and web folder, you also have FULL RIGHTS to access your student's spaces, too! Handy if you need to offer assistance or grade their work.
Do my TA's get an account?
Sure, but it won't happen automatically. Please submit a helpdesk ticket and include the TA's NetID and the course number.
What about student add/drops?
Due to limits of various administrative systems, we are only able to refresh enrollment data once per day to create new accounts. When a student registers for a course, there will be a slight (24-48 hours) delay before the change propagates to IST-S-STUDENTS. Please be patient!
Can I access these services from my personal device?
Sure. However, it's a bit tricky since the system is tied in with SU's directory service. See the tutorial below called Connecting to Microsoft SQL Server - OFF domain.
Can I access these services from off-campus?
Yes, but you'll need to use the SU remote access tool. http://its.syr.edu/security/remoteaccess/sura.cfm
