Free student license

  • You can get a free license for ArcGIS Pro to install on a personal computer.
  • (ArcGIS Desktop is being phased out in favor of ArcGIS Pro. You can still use Desktop by logging into a lab computer.)

Renewing the free license

  • The license expires every year in August.
  • You'll need to get a new license prvc file from the link above. The name of the file starts with "EducationSiteArcGISPro_SingleUse_". For example, the Aug 2022 file is called EducationSiteArcGISPro_SingleUse_1211287.prvc.
  • Specific steps:
    • Go to the link above. Scroll down to the Installation Information section and look for Download Link.
    • Visit the download link and download two files:
      • the license file EducationSiteArcGISPro_SingleUse_xxxxxxx.prvc
      • the instructions for installing the license file "3 Authorize your SINGLE USE license for ArcGIS Pro.docx"
    • Follow the instructions to activate the new license.

ArcGIS Online account

  • Many additional features are available if you sign in to ArcGIS Pro using a special SU ArcGIS Online account.
  • To obtain this account, email John Olson of the SU Library at jaolson@syr.edu and request "an SU ArcGIS Online account".
  • The account has a username in the format [NetID]_SyrUniv.
  • Once you have this account you will be able to sign into Pro to access online maps as well as ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS StoryMaps and the Esri E-Training site.

Using ArcGIS Pro in the arch computer labs

  • ArcGIS Pro is available in the computer labs.  The older ArcGIS Desktop products such as Catalog, Map, etc., are also available but are in the process of being phased out.
  • Sign into ArcGIS Pro with the SU ArcGIS Online account described above to access additional resources.

Troubleshooting the free license installation

  • If the 'Authorizing Software' step gives the error 'Unable to prepare your authorization', check the Windows services list (services.msc) and make sure the ArcGIS licensing service is set to auto start instead of manual.

3D Analyst Tools

  • Open ArcGIS Pro and start a Map project.
  • Click the Analysis tab.
  • Click the Tools button.

  • On the right side of the window, the Geoprocessing panel should appear.
  • Within the Geoprocessing panel, click the Toolboxes tab and 3D Analyst Tools should appear at the top.

Tips

  • If you need to open .e00 files, ArcGIS Pro cannot open them directly. Here are two methods to convert them:
    • Use ArcMap, which is installed on the lab computers. ArcMap is part of ArcGIS Desktop.
    • Use Autodesk 3d Map, which is also installed on the lab computers. You can also install the software on your personal computer by obtaining it from the Autodesk Education site.
