The online application consists of a number of questions about your academic status, contact information, outstanding award applications and preliminary information about your project.

The Proposal.

Page 1. Doctoral Dissertation or MA Thesis Graduate Program Status.
Provide a brief summary of your progress and current status in your doctoral or MA graduate (doctoral/master's) program (coursework completed, research focus, faculty supervisor, dissertation or thesis committee if applicable).
Pages 2-3. Project Description.
Please describe the project for which you are seeking funds. Your proposal text must be no longer than 500 words. Briefly describe your project, ; locate your work and potential contributions in the most important relevant scholarship; outline your proposed methods and state why they fit your topic. A list of references may add a page to the 500 words of text. Include a word count at the end of your 500-word narrative. Proposals exceeding the 500-word limit will not be considered.
Page 4. Budget.
Please provide a detailed budget. Categories may include stipends, living expenses (either in Syracuse or elsewhere while doing research), travel, per diems, survey design and administration, book/data/software purchases, research fees, and so on. Equipment is not eligible for inclusion in the budget.
Page 5. Other Support.
Please provide details about other support that you have received for this project this summer. If you have no other financial support, say so explicitly. Finally, please list the all other applications that you have made for project support from summer 2023 through summer 2024 ((i.e.g., FLAS, etc.).

Vita. Upload your Curriculum Vitae to the online application. Your contact information (mail, tel., email), should appear there.
Part 4.
Letter of Recommendation.
Please arrange for one recommendation letter from a Syracuse University faculty member to be submitted as part of your application. The letter must be focused on the research you propose. Include the letter writer's writer’s name in your proposal, and ask that person to send their letter as a PDF via their university email account to Dr. Matthew H Baxter at : mhbaxter@syr.edu. no later than Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at the deadline date by 11:59 pm ET.
You will be asked to identify your letter writer in the online application, and this person will receive an email requesting the letter upon submission of your application (progressing to the next page on the application does not trigger the email to your recommender). It is your responsibility to make sure that the recommender provides us with a letter of recommendation for you on time (that isTuesday, February 28, 2023 at , on the deadline date by 11:59 pm ET). The Moynihan Institute takes no responsibility for soliciting letters of recommendation. Do not rely on the automated application email to secure your letter of recommendation.
After applying, you should receive a notice indicating that your application was received.
OTHER DETAILS:
Proposals will be read by a faculty committee. The committee will rank the proposals according to their promise, consistency with the goals indicated in these guidelines, and cost effectiveness. Award notices will be sent by email on or about April 3, 2023.
We will be offering a Proposal Writing Workshop on Tuesday, February 9 at 3 pm ET in Eggers 341. The workshop will be hosted by Sue Wadley, Professor of Anthropology, Emerita.

Our Expectations:
(i) Award recipients are required to send a brief biography and project abstract (100-250 words total) with a headshot photo to Dr. Matthew H. one to two paragraphs in all) and a photo to Matt Baxter (mhbaxter@syr.edu) by May 15, 2023 for April 15 of the application's academic year for use on the Moynihan Institute’s website, and, upon research completion: website
(ii) submit a 300-500 word report outlining research activities to mhbaxter@syr.edu; (iii) provide 3-5 photos representing the award’s use that would be suitable for distribution via the Moynihan Institute’s social media, and; (iv) be prepared to present your research or field experience upon invitation. Additional award-specific requirements, including deadlines for the preceding ones, will We expect that you will give a presentation on your research project upon invitation
(iii) We ask that you write a 1-2 page follow-up report on your grant related research activities
(iv) Additional requirements may be explained in the award notice.
The Bharati Memorial Award was established in 1994 to encourage and facilitate the study of South Asia among specifically among doctoral students at Maxwell. We therefore strongly encourage its recipients to present their projects in relevant forums during the 20232024-2024 2025 academic year, such as at the Annual Conference on South Asia, University of Wisconsin-Madison or other appropriate professional society conferences. Bharati Memorial Award recipients should also make significant efforts to publish a paper based on their funded project. Any publications and presentations that result from this award should acknowledge the “Bharati Memorial Award/South Asia Center Summer Research Grant Program at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.”
