Adding a Banner to Your Course

If your course does not have an existing banner, and you would like one to add to the aesthetic of your Course page, here are quick steps to add one to your course.

1. Go to your Course page, then on the Details & Actions menu select "Edit display settings" (see image below).

...

2. The Display Settings menu will appear on the right side of the Course page. Select the picture Image Added icon opposite Course Image (see image below).

...

3. Once you click on the picture Image Added icon, the Insert Image dialog box will appear.  You have 2 choices for image selection:

You can select "Upload from Device"; this is where you would use saved images from your laptop or desktop (see image above). You can upload or drag saved images to this area noted in the image above.  If you select the "Upload file" button, you are immediately sent to your device folders. You select the image you need, then select the blue "Open" button. Ensure that your image size is 1200 x 240 pixels (px) or larger.

...

Also, you can conveniently select "Stock images from Unsplash". These are images that are already created on the platform for users. By default, images that initially show are based on your course title. However, you can use the "Search" box and find specific images you want. Once you click on the image you desire, then select "Next" at the bottom right of the Insert Image dialog box. Adjust the portion of the image you want to be visible on your banner, then select "Save".

...

4. Alternative Text or Decorative Image

Regardless of your choice of image, you will be prompted to note if the image is required for accessibility or decorative purposes. If the image is needed for more than decorative purposes you will need to enter alternative text in the "Alternative text" box. If not, check the "Mark the image as decorative" box.

5. Once you have completed step 4, you can select "Save". Your banner should display immediately. If not, please refresh the page. Please note that your course banner image is the same image that is applied to your course card when you view your courses in grid view

Editing the Course Image

Info
titleDetails to note when selecting an image:
  • The minimum recommended size for the banner image is: 1200 x 240 pixels.
  • Note that images with text don't scale well.
  • An abstract image or one with a focus at the center would work better for a banner, due to cropping variability.
  • While visual components of courses are helpful for aesthetic and identification purposes, it is important to adhere to accessibility best practices and standards.  If the image is primary content, be sure to include an image description for screen readers.  Otherwise, mark the image as decorative.
