Overview

The IST-S-STUDENTS DBLAB.ISCHOOL.SYR.EDU server is a web and database hosting environment used by technology classes database management courses in the iSchool. If you're taking or teaching a web design, web programming, or database design class such as: IST263, IST553, IST479, IST679, IST359, or IST659 then this server will probably suit your needs. All iSchool courses are eligible to use this service to supplement teaching or project work within their class.

What Technologies Are Supported?

As of Fall 2013:

  • Web Page Design (HTML / CSS / Javascript)
  • ASP.NET webpage development on .NET 4
  • PHP 5.3 Scripting Language
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
  • MySQL Server 5.6

If something's missing that you need... please ask via helpdesk ticket via https://my.ischool.syr.edu

How Does it work?

The system is self-service! iSchool course instructors are allowed to setup their own ist-s-students space by visiting the section under My It Services. When the instructor makes the request to create the accounts a script carries out the task usually within the hour. Each account has:

  • Space on the server for uploading ASP.NET, HTML or PHP scripts using the FTP protocol.
  • Administrative access to their own SQL Server Database.
  • Administrative access to their own MySQL Server Database

What if my student is in another class also using this service?

No Problem! Each student in your course gets their own IST-S-STUDENTS account. This account is tied to your class section so if a student is enrolled in two different courses such as IST359 and IST263 she will have two separate accountsThe system is configured to utilize the university's Microsoft Active Directory service, which means you sign in using your SU NetID and password. Check out the tutorials section to get started.

As the class instructor, do

...

I

...

get an account?

Yup. You Yes, you get an account for each class section you setupthat you're teaching in the current semester. Your account works just like a student account EXCEPT in addition to your own FTP, SQL and MySQL databasesdatabases and web folder, you also have FULL RIGHTS to access your student's spaces, too! Handy if you need to offer assistance or grade their work.

Do my TA's get an account?

You bet. Although since no administrative system contains information on your teaching assistant, we'll have to add them manuallySure, but it won't happen automatically since these students aren't enrolled. Please submit a helpdesk ticket and we'll get right on itinclude the TA's NetID and the course number.

What

...

about student add/drops?

Once you create your IST-S-STUDENTS accounts, any students who add or drop your class will be added as well. It will take up to 24 HOURS for our scripts to process these changes, due to limitations with reading these changes from administrative systemsDue to limits of various administrative systems, we are only able to refresh enrollment data once per day to create new accounts. When a student registers for a course, there will be a slight (up to 24 hours) delay before the change propagates to DBLAB.ISCHOOL.SYR.EDU. Please be patient!

Do you have tutorials explaining how to use the service?

Yes we do. Please check out the IST-S-STUDENTS tutorials section for details.

Can I access these services from off-campus?

Yes, but you'll need to use the SU remote access tool. httpwe highly recommend using RDS (https://itsrds.syr.edu/security/remoteaccess/sura.cfm

Can you add feature XYZ?

Yes, but depending on the request it might not happen until subsequent semesters. It's important not to jeopardize the stability of the server for other classes.

) to connect to an SU Lab computer. The 'iSchool' pool has MS SQL Management Studio installed.
