Matthew R. Cleary
Chair, International Relations Program
Associate Professor, Political Science
Professor Cleary is an Associate Professor in Political Science, a Robert D. McClure Professor of Teaching Excellence, and the Chair of the International Relations Program. His main research interests are in Latin American politics and he has published work on democratic institutions, indigenous politics, and civil-military relations in the region. He earned a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. Professor Cleary has taught at Syracuse since 2005.

Professor Northrup is the coordinator and advisor for the International Relations-based minors in Global Political Economy and Global Security Studies and serves as the faculty advisor for the International Relations Club. She teaches International Relations and Political Science courses, including Introduction to International Relations (PSC 124), International Relations Honors (PSC 139), and Global Community (MAX 132), and Globalization and the Information Age (IRP 322). Her research interests focus on conflict resolution, the role of identity in conflict, and political and policy implications of the information age. She has been a member of the faculty at Syracuse University since 1989.
Amy Kennedy
Academic Advisor
Amy joined the International Relations Program as the academic advisor in 2012. She advises prospective majors, newly-declared majors, and sophomore and junior IR majors. She holds bachelor’s degrees in English and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a master’s degree in International Relations from the Maxwell School. Prior to her current role, Amy worked in the international development and food security sector in Washington, D.C. She has extensive study abroad experience including Semester at Sea as an undergraduate, and coursework in the U.K., France, and Uganda as a graduate student.
