Course Description

This course examines the intersection between science fiction and the field of international relations (IR). Science fiction authors have long explored IR-type themes, including interstellar war, the rise and decline of empires, nationalism, revolution, and the consequences of technological change on society. Students in the course will read a set of science fiction novels and short stories, as well as a secondary literature that integrates science fiction with IR. The course will be reading- and writing-intensive, focusing on the social scientific (and IR) themes that run through the science fiction genre.
