Preparing for PHP 422 Senior Capstone Internship
Registration for PHP 422 is by “permission of instructor” only. Permission will be granted to students who:
- Are designated as senior-level status (earned a minimum of 85 credits applicable to the Public Health major).
- Whose courses completed to date have been reviewed for applicability to the internship experience.
- Have attended the group meeting scheduled the semester prior to their planned internship.
- Have completed all required paperwork and secured faculty advisor signatures.
- Have met with the internship placement coordinator to finalize the placement
Failure to meet these requirements will result in a delay in registration for PHP 422 and may ultimately delay graduation.
To allow sufficient time to complete the required hours in the internship, it is highly recommended that students limit their semester total credit registration to 12-15 credits, inclusive of the internship. The Public Health Internship is a planned, deliberate, full semester experience to be completed in the senior year of undergraduate study. Internship work varies by site and some sites are looking for interns with specific knowledge and skills and therefore your placement is dependent on public health coursework completed. Meeting with your academic advisor is important to begin the process of internship planning – what are your interests (population, type of public health work)?, what can you bring skill-wise to an internship?, based on courses completed – a placement where generalist public health skills are sufficient or a placement where public health concentration skills can be further developed?
These steps explain the internship planning process:
Step 1: Prepare or update a resume that is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors. Consider making an appointment on Handshake to see Career Services staff who offer assistance with resume creation. This resume, along with a copy of your unofficial academic advising transcript, is needed to complete step 3.
Step 2: Register for Tevera. You will need to visit the “Pre-Planning” organization on your Blackboard under “Organizations”. In this Organization, click the link labeled “Tevera”. This will bring you to our internship tracking system. Please use your SU email and create a password to register for the site. This step is needed to complete step 3.
Step 3: Complete the PHP 422 Internship Application on Tevera.
- Carefully follow the instructions provided and complete all fields.
- Submit application. The form will not submit if required fields have been left blank.
- The submitted copy will be sent to your advisor’s Tevera account and they will be notified via email.
Step 4: Make an appointment to meet with your advisor to discuss eligibility for PHP 422, your resume, your interests, and your plans post-graduation. Your advisor must sign your application. Your advisor will electronically sign your application using the Tevera system.
Step 5: You will be contacted by Mel Stoffel or Megan Snow via email when it is time to make an appointment with an internship coordinator to discuss potential internship sites. All internship placements go through the Internship Coordinators, and only the Internship Coordinators can approve a placement. Students are asked to not contact sites themselves without prior approval from an internship coordinator.
Preferred semester of completion (noted on application):
- Summer: Restricted to 18 students, summer graduates are guaranteed enrollment.
Summer students are charged the usual summer tuition rate. Financial aid and loan money may not be available in summer. Students should check with their financial aid officer before considering summer. - Fall: Restricted to 24 students, December graduates guaranteed enrollment; all others – enrollment based on usual practices of timeliness of registration; the course will close @24 students.
- Spring: Restricted to 48 students, May graduates guaranteed enrollment.
Registration and Hour Requirements:
Community Health Education concentration: 9 credits; 400 internship hours required.
Addiction Prevention: 2 credits; 90 internship hours required.
Health and Society: 3 credits; 135 internship hours required.
Healthcare Management: 3 credits, 135 internship hours required.
Registration will be cancelled if:
