Requirements:

Detailed description:  At The Hatton Law Firm PLLC, our team understands the difficulties that many families face and the issues that affect parents as they work to provide for their children’s needs. Our experience representing clients who have suffered serious injuries has given us an appreciation of the sacrifices that parents regularly make to better the lives of their children.   All applicants must submit an essay of 500 words or less answering the following prompt:

"What do you aspire to be? How do you plan to use your college degree to further your career and achieve your life goals?"

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • An applicant must be from a low-income family with an annual income of less than $80,000.
  • An applicant must be at least 17 years old.
  • An applicant must be enrolled in or accepted to an undergraduate or graduate program.
  • An applicant must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Deadline: October 17, 2023 

We will review all applications as soon as possible after they are submitted. We expect to announce a winner within 30 days after the scholarship application deadline.

Amount: $1,000

Scholarship: The Honorable Federick J. Scullin, Jr. Difference Makers Scholarship Requirements:

Detailed description:   In December 2005, the Northern District of New York Federal Court Bar Association (“the Association”) established The Honorable Frederick J. Scullin, Jr. Scholarship Program to recognize exemplary law students who attend Albany Law School, Cornell University College of Law, and Syracuse University College of Law.  In calendar year 2023, the Association will select three (3) scholars, one from each school, each of whom will receive a scholarship in the sum of $2,000.  Students currently in their second year of law school are eligible to apply. Along with a copy of the scholarship application, students must submit the following: 

  • Law school transcript (to date)
  • Resume
  • A personal statement of not more than 250 words stating why you are an appropriate recipient of this prestigious award and why you are interested in Federal Practice. 

Deadline: October 15, 2023 

Interested students may submit their applications electronically to the Scholarship Program Chairs, Doreen A. Simmons, Esq. (dsimmons@hancocklaw.com) and Adam J. Katz, Esq., (Adam.Katz@usdoj.gov) by October 15, 2023.  Members of the Scholarship Program Committee will interview applicants under consideration during the month of October, 2023 and will notify the selected scholars shortly thereafter.  The Association will present the scholarships at its Annual Meeting on November 30, 2023, in Syracuse, New York.

Requirements: Detailed description: The scholarship has been established by the Foundation through a gift from the Local and State Government Law Section of the New

 State Bar Association (NYSBA) to honor the memory of Carol Van Scoyoc, Esq., a former chair of the Section and recipient of the Association's Award for Excellence in Public Service, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the legal profession and the public good. Each year, a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a law student who best exemplifies the core values important to Carol: academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in public service and an
interest in municipal law.
The applicant must submit the following as a single PDF file:

  • Completed application 
  • Cover letter of interest in public service and the pursuit of a career in the civil practice of 
    municipal law.
  • A resume describing prior employment and other relevant qualifications and activities.
  • Law school transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a law school professor
    unrelated to the applicant by blood or marriage.
  • An essay written by the student demonstrating why the student exemplifies Carol Van 
    Scoyoc’s core values. The essay should be no more than two pages, 12-point font, double 
    spaced with one-inch margins.

  • Students must have maintained a minimum 3.0 or equivalent GPA in law school and a ranking in the top quarter of their class as of the July 1 preceding their application.
  • Students must document their interest in public service and the pursuit of a career in the civil practice of municipal law.
  • While an applicant’s financial need will be considered, it is not required for selection

The 2024 scholarship recipient will be notified in December 2023 and will be invited to  attend the Section’s Annual Meeting in January 2024.

Requirements: Detailed description: The scholarship has been established by the Foundation through a gift from the Real Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) and from Rosalyn Mitzner to honor the memory of Melvyn Mitzner, a former Chair of the Section.  The $5,000.00 scholarship will be awarded to a second or third-year law student. Efforts will be made to honor Melvyn Mitzner’s commitment to professional achievement in the area of real property law including legal writing, lecturing and scholarship, and diversity in the profession. To ensure geographic diversity, the Foundation will strive to select students attending New York State law schools in different counties each year, so that over time students from all areas of the State will be able to benefit from the scholarship. The applicant must submit the following as a single PDF file:

  • Cover letter of interest in the practice of real property law. 
  • A resume describing prior employment and other relevant qualifications and activities.
  • Law school transcript.

Requirements: to apply for the Difference Makers Scholarship, we ask students to submit contact information and proof of enrollment (examples: unofficial academic transcript, letter of acceptance/admittance, etc.) We also require that each student include a submission in the form of an essay (1,000 word or less) or video (5 minutes or less) answering the following prompt: 

  • What is the best memory you have made while making a difference within your community? What positive changes do you hope to make in your community in the near future? Why do you think this type of service is important?

Scholarship: The John Alexander Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2023-2024

Detailed Description: The Fund was established in 1980 by the Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth M. Alexander, a widow of John Alexander. The Fund was created to provide scholarships for Schenectady County residents. 

Requirements: The conditions for receipt of the scholarship are that the applicant reside in Schenectady County and be a full-time candidate for a Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Law Degree at an accredited New York Law School. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Proof of residency in Schenectady County (i.e. copy of driver's license) 
  • Letter from Syracuse Law confirming enrollment and good academic standing 

Deadline: December 1, 2023  

Amount: The income of the trust and the number of applicants determines the amount of the scholarship to be awarded to each recipient in a given year. As such, there is no set amount awarded for the scholarship from year to year. Last year, there were sixteen (16) recipients, each of whom received $2,375.

Detailed Description:  Beginning in 2023, DWI Tom intends to offer a $2,500 “What We Can Do to Prevent People From Driving Intoxicated in Our Communities?” Scholarship to rising and current college students. Students can submit essays between 500 and 1,000 words to the firm’s scholarship selection committee for a chance to win the firm’s financial support.

DWI Tom hopes that this scholarship encourages incoming and current college students to think critically about the dangers of drinking and driving. The firm intends to judge incoming scholarship essays on a student’s creativity and research as well as their suggestions’ actionability.

Requirements: DWI Tom wants rising and current college students to answer the question, “What can we do to prevent people from driving intoxicated in our communities?” The firm requests that students’ finished essays fall between 500 and 1,000 words.

Our founding attorney, Michelle Behan, is a U.S. Navy Veteran, and she has been a passionate advocate for Veterans throughout her legal career, including by providing criminal defense counsel for Veterans in need and serving on a regional committee for Veterans’ issues in Arizona under Senator Jeff Flake.

We are offering The Behan Law Group Military Veteran Scholarship to support Veterans and their children in the pursuit of higher education. This scholarship in the amount of $1,000 can be used for tuition and other educational expenses at a college or university of your choice.

      • "How has your experience as a Veteran or the child of a Veteran influenced your academic and career goals? How do you plan to use your education to make a positive impact in your community? 
  • With your essay, you will also need to submit your most recent high school or college academic transcript, proof of military service for yourself or your parent, a professional headshot, and contact information including your name, address, phone number, and email address. 

Deadline: December 6, 2023 

They will select and notify winners no later than January 8, 2024, and they will work with the financial aid department at your university to submit the award.

Our Diversity in Law Scholarship will award a $2,500 scholarship for law school tuition or other school-related expenses. 

This scholarship will be available to 1L/2L students who attend an ABA-accredited law school in the United States and identify as members of a historically underrepresented group within the legal profession.

This year we will be awarding a $5,000 scholarship to a current college or trade school student, or high school senior accepted into and soon to enter a college or trade school. 

Requirements:

  • A well-written essay between 750 to 1,000 words, submitted in Word, PDF, or Plain Text, answering this key question:

  • A valid proof showcasing your enrollment or acceptance at a college or trade school. 

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • You must be a U.S. citizen

  • For high school seniors with an acceptance into post-secondary education, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 during your high school tenure is required.

Detailed Description: To advance the goals of diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, Modrall Sperling has established the Max J. Madrid Law Diversity Scholarship. The scholarship provides tuition assistance towards an awardee's second or third year or law school in the amount of $10,000. The scholarship's name honors our former litigation partner and dear friend who tragically passed away in 2012. Max was a passionate advocate for the goals of diversity and inclusion that we espouse. 

Requirements: Application must be submitted by e-mail to Regina Torrez, reinat@modrall.com. For an application to be considered complete and reviewed, it must include all of the following: 

  • A personal statement of 500 to 700 words addressing eligibility and selection criteria;
  • A current resume showing applicant's education, job history, and community involvement;
  • A five- to ten-page writing sample, unedited by any third party, preferably on a law topic;
  • Transcripts (official or unofficial) from undergraduate and graduate or law programs; and
  • Two academic, professional and/or employment references, with full contact information. 

Basic Eligibility: 

  • Persons in their first or second year of law school may apply

Selection Criteria: 

  • Strong academic achievement in college, and if applicable, first year of law school;
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities with employment and/or community service experience;
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and communication skills, including written and oral;
  • Compelling statement of the applicant's desire and the ability to overcome obstacles;
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and demonstrated desire to practice law in the State of New Mexico; and
  • The student must be in good standing, and the chosen law school must be ABA-accredited. 

Deadline: January 26, 2024
