The IST-S-STUDENTS server is a web and database hosting environment used by technology classes in the iSchool. If you're taking or teaching a web design, web programming, or database design class such as: IST263, IST553, IST479, IST679, IST359, or IST659 then this server will probably suit your needs. All iSchool courses are eligible to use this service to supplement teaching or project work within their class.
**NEW FOR FALL 2016**
The IST-S-STUDENTS system is now configured to utilize the university's Microsoft Active Directory service. This means the user experience will be a bit different but overall we think it's for the best.
The "good":
- Student and instructor accounts are automatically generated based on course enrollment – instructors no longer need to manually create accounts
- Authentication now uses your NetID and password rather than a custom account
- Each student and instructor is now provisioned a web home directory on the G-drive – no more FTP
The (not so) "bad":
- Off-domain (personal computers or "unmanaged" staff/faculty computers) will require a little bit of finagling to connect SQL Management Studio to your databases, since you need to run the program with your SU domain account. However, this is fairly straightforward and is explained in a tutorial below.
- MySQL support has ended – for the past several semesters there has been little to no utilization of MySQL so we've decided to retire it
What Technologies Are Supported?
...
- Web Page Design (HTML / CSS / Javascript)
- Database design using Microsoft SQL Server 2014
- PHP 7.0 Scripting Language
If something's missing that you need... please ask via helpdesk ticket via https://my.ischool.syr.edu
How Does it work?
The system is now tied in with the campus Active Directory, so your SU NetID and password are used for authentication. Also, accounts are now generated automatically - so there is no need for instructors to create accounts for their classes.

Administrative access to their own SQL Server Database
...
What if my student is in another class also using this service?
By default, the system will give each instructor 'db_owner' permissions on their students' databases. If your student needs an entirely different database rather than just using new tables, please submit a helpdesk ticket via https://my.ischool.syr.edu/ and we can accommodateNo problem. Each iSchool student is provided with a database account for each IST course for which they are registered.
As the class instructor, do *I* get an account?
